BREAKING: San Antonio Spurs Shocking New Lineup

On October 20th, Greg Popovich (Coach Pop)- legendary San Antonio Spurs coach- revealed the starting lineup for the 2024 season. The announced lineup surprised NBA fans for good reason.

The starting group consists of Devin Vassell (small forward/shooting guard), Keldon Johnson (power forward/small forward), Victor Wembanyama (power forward/center), Zach Collins (power forward/center), and Jeremy Sochan (point guard) at the one.

With a new face at the point guard position, this Spurs lineup will dominate on the defensive side of the ball. This is not the first time we will see Sochan play at the one, as we got a glimpse of his performance last season and during his time at Baylor University. There are likely many factors in Coach Pop’s decision to have Tre Jones play behind Sochan, but Sochan’s awareness and promise to playmaking are among his best qualities as a high IQ player.

Although Jones is undoubtedly the best floor general on the Spurs roster, it is known that he is an undersized point guard who continues to struggle from the three. With the Spurs’ emphasis on defense, it is hard to hide Jones on defense with his small six-foot-one frame. In contrast, Jeremy Sochan, a six-foot-nine switchable defender, is the kind of player Coach Pop is willing to take a risk on to lead the offense.

Despite this change in the Spurs lineup, do not expect the minutes for Jones to decrease drastically. He will likely continue to be closing out games as the lead guard. The “Sochan experiment” won’t last for the rest of the season either. Tre Jones signed a two-year extension with the Spurs worth nearly $20 million. Jones has showcased his high playmaking upside as he finished in the top ten last season in assist-to-turnover ratio, which proves his potential to lead this Spurs offense is worth keeping him around.
